Active or Index Funds for 2009?: Steve Condon, CFA January 4, 2009
Condon was quoted in the January 4, 2009 publication of the Wall Street
Journal. "We recently replaced any actively managed funds with passive or index funds to ensure a full participation in an eventual recovery. In an index fund, your money is fully invested and will fully benefit from gains as soon as the market turns around. In contrast, many actively managed funds have built up large cash positions in recent months -- in some cases as much as 40% or more -- to try to cushion losses. Since no one can predict when the bottom of the market will occur, active managers sitting on piles of cash are likely to miss out on the early stages of a recovery, the early stages of a recovery are critical."

Roth Is a Good Way to Hedge on Your Future Taxes: John Evans, CPA, CFP January 2, 2009
Evans was quoted in the January 2, 2009 publication of the Wall Street Journal. "Depending on your income, making a Roth 401(k) contributions instead of traditional 401(k) could affect your tax bill. Since Roth contributions are made on an after-tax basis, your taxable income would be higher than if you invested in a traditional 401(k). So, you may want to check with an accountant to see whether the lack of a traditional 401(k) deferral would force you to pay alternative minimum tax."
